Legal basis for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Until the beginning of 2015, the area of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape M-V was designated as the Nature Park Mecklenburgisches Elbetal. The enactment of the "Law on the Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" on 1 February 2015 resulted in a number of changes for the area and other laws, ordinances and legal provisions of the state:

The ordinances on the Mecklenburg Elbetal Nature Park, the Mecklenburg Elbetal Landscape Conservation Area and the ten existing nature conservation areas located therein were repealed.
The biosphere reserve was divided into core, maintenance and development zones in accordance with the international guidelines from the UNESCO programme.
The areas of the landscape conservation area have been transferred to the protection status of the development zone and the areas of the nature conservation areas to the protection status of the maintenance zones.
The already existing European bird sanctuaries and the sites of community importance protected under the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive within the framework of Natura 2000 remain untouched.
